Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions about working with Mansfield Computing Solutions? Here are the ones we hear most often. Don’t see yours here? Give us a call — we’re happy to talk it through.
It’s not too late — this is one of the most common calls we get. We’ll start with a free consultation to understand what you’ve got in place (or don’t), then help you build a plan starting with the highest-priority items like backups and security.
Your free consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation, usually 30 to 45 minutes, by phone or on-site. We’ll ask about how your business uses technology, what’s frustrating you, and what you’re hoping to improve, then give you honest recommendations with no obligation to move forward.
We primarily support Windows-based systems, servers, and networks, which covers the majority of small business environments we work with. If you’ve got a mixed environment, give us a call and we’ll talk through what we can help with.
Either one works. Some clients bring us in for a specific project, like a server install, network upgrade, or office move, while others prefer ongoing managed support. We’ll talk through both options during your consultation.
We work with most major VoIP providers, including Vonage, RingCentral, Zoom Phone, Microsoft Teams Phone, 8×8, and Nextiva. We’re not tied to one provider, so we’ll help you compare options and land on the system that actually fits your business.
Both. We offer hands-on software training, one-on-one or as a group, so your team actually knows how to use the tools you’re paying for. We also provide basic cybersecurity awareness guidance to help employees recognize phishing emails and scams.
Yes — this is one of the things we do most often. We set up secure remote access, VPNs, cloud file sharing, and remote desktop connections so your team can work from home, a job site, or on the road without compromising security.
Don’t pay anyone anything before calling us, and don’t keep working on the infected machine. We’ll help assess the damage, isolate the infected systems, and work on removing the threat and recovering your data from backup wherever possible — which is exactly why a tested backup matters so much.
For most businesses, yes. Cloud backup protects you if something happens on-site, like a fire, theft, or flood, while a local backup usually gets you back up and running faster since you’re not waiting on a download over the internet. We’ll help you figure out the right mix based on your data volume and how quickly you’d need it restored.
We serve businesses and individuals throughout Wake Forest, Youngsville, Rolesville, Franklinton, Louisburg, Raleigh, Lake Royale, and Kittrell, NC, along with the surrounding Triangle-area communities. If you’re nearby and not sure whether you’re in our service area, just ask.
A lot of our support can be handled remotely, which usually means faster fixes and less disruption to your day. For things like server installs, network wiring, or hardware repairs, we’ll come to you in person.
In many cases, a slow computer can be fixed rather than replaced. A lot of performance problems come down to a full hard drive, too little memory, or a system that’s never been cleaned up — issues that are usually cheaper to resolve than buying a new machine. We’ll diagnose it honestly and tell you if a repair makes sense or if replacement really is the better option.
IT support costs vary depending on what you need — a one-time repair is priced differently than ongoing managed support for a full office. We don’t use one-size-fits-all pricing, so the best way to get real numbers is a free consultation where we look at your setup and give you a straight answer.
No — Mansfield Computing Solutions doesn’t require long-term contracts. We’d rather earn your business every month by doing good work than lock you into something you’re not happy with. We’ll talk through what makes sense for your situation during your free consultation.
Most issues can be diagnosed and often resolved remotely the same day you call. For problems that need a technician on-site in Raleigh, Wake Forest, or the surrounding area, we’ll schedule a visit as quickly as possible. Managed clients also benefit from proactive monitoring that catches many problems before they cause downtime at all.
Managed IT Services from MCS include ongoing remote monitoring, security updates, antivirus and malware protection, backup management, server administration, and general troubleshooting. Instead of waiting for something to break, we catch small issues proactively before they turn into a full day of downtime.
Both. While a lot of our work is with small businesses, we also help residential customers throughout the Raleigh and Wake Forest area with everyday computer problems — slow machines, virus removal, backup setup, and general troubleshooting.
We work with small and medium-sized businesses of nearly every kind — construction and development firms, professional offices, automotive businesses, and local service companies — as well as one-person home offices. If your business runs on computers, a network, or email, we can probably help.
A Few Quick Things You Can Try Yourself
Not every computer problem needs a service call. Here are a few basic things worth trying first — and when it’s time to just give us a call instead.
Start by restarting the computer — a real restart, not just closing the lid. This clears memory that’s tied up by background programs and lets any pending updates finish, and it fixes more problems than people expect. After that, check how much storage space you have left, since a nearly-full hard drive is one of the most common causes of a sluggish computer. If it’s still slow afterward, that’s a good sign it’s time to have someone take a closer look.
Stop clicking on anything and don’t enter any passwords. Disconnect from the internet if you can (unplug the network cable or turn off WiFi), then run a scan using your antivirus software — on most Windows PCs, that’s the built-in Windows Security app. If the scan finds something serious, or you’re not sure whether it’s actually gone, stop there and call us rather than continuing to work on the machine.

Click the Start menu, open Settings, and select Windows Update — Windows will tell you if updates are available and let you install them from there. It’s worth checking periodically, since updates often include security fixes, not just new features. Save your work first, since some updates require a restart to finish installing.

Close the program completely (use Task Manager if it won’t close normally) and reopen it. If that doesn’t help, restart the computer, which resolves a surprising number of one-off software glitches. If the same program keeps crashing after that, it may need an update or reinstall.
Start by emptying your Recycle Bin and clearing your browser’s downloads folder, since both tend to quietly fill up over time. Windows also has a built-in Storage tool (search “Storage settings”) that shows what’s taking up space and can clean up temporary files automatically. If you’re consistently low on space, it may be time to talk about an upgrade or cloud storage.
Yes. Restarting clears out memory tied up by programs running in the background and gives pending updates a chance to finish installing. If you tend to just close the lid or leave your computer running for days at a time, try restarting it every few days and see if you notice a difference.
